The beauty and complexity of the environment around us allows for a feeling of  interconnectedness with the ecosystems and a deeper understanding of the world around us. Have you ever walked through nature, made contact with the trees, the soil, the sounds, and really felt the connection to earth around you? Have you ever recognized and sat with the feeling of energy in the natural elements passing through you? Well this is grounding, also known as earthing! Grounding is the practice of connecting with the earth’s natural energy by touching the earth with your skin, and  it’s usually done barefoot! What is actually happening is your body is connecting with earth’s natural electrical charge and it’s a practice that has been used for a very long time. Due to the fact that the Earth’s surface is negatively charged, proponents of earthing believe that by connecting to this charge, the body can absorb electrons that can neutralize free radicals, reduce inflammation, and promote overall health and well-being.

Some other benefits of grounding are reducing stress and anxiety in the body. It’s also been shown to improve your mood,  increase energy and promote relaxation in the body. There’s a variety of ways grounding could help improve physical and mental health! There’s also a variety  of different ways to practice the art of grounding.

A few different ways to practice grounding are:

  1. Walking barefoot on natural surfaces. This could include walking on grass, soil, sand and even rocks! But you must be barefoot! You must have a direct connection to absorb the full charge of Mother Earth.
  2. Swimming in natural bodies of water. Swimming in lakes, rivers and oceans is also a great way to absorb the earth’s energy. Being drenched in the pure elements of the earth is the perfect way to get your entire body to experience the genuine charges of grounding.
  3. Using grounding devices. Did you know there are devices to help magnify the experience of grounding? Even indoors! There are special grounding mats that connect to earth’s electric field. These mats could be used while sitting, standing and even sleeping! There are also other devices like ground rods that could also allow you to ground yourself in the comfort of your own home.

Grounding is a very simple and natural practice that helps offer a variety of benefits. With being able to practice grounding in so many ways, make sure you’re in tune with which technique makes you feel the strongest connection with the elements, and most importantly yourself. Whether you’re swimming through the invigorating waterfalls of Uvita or walking around barefoot in the Synergy venue. If you’d like to reduce stress or boost your energy, grounding would be a great tool to recharge your body, mind and soul.
